Kiruna and the North

Northern Sweden is a paradise for outdoor activities and encounters with nature. Experience silence and wilderness in Sarek National Park, climb Kebnekaise, the highest mountain of Sweden or visit Åre, the largest winter sports resort in Northern Europe and host of the Alpine World Championships in 2007. In Riksgränsen, Sweden's most northerly area for winter sports, you can even go skiing in shorts by the midnight sun in late June.

In Kiruna, the fantastic countryside varies from mountains with beautiful, crystal clear lakes and birch forests, to ancient wooded areas with lively streams and bogland filled with berries. There are plenty of well-marked walks and day treks that can be tackled by foot in summer and on skis in winter. Kiruna also offers exciting culture. Experience being part of Lappish daily life, meet with reindeers, travel by dog sleigh or spend a night at the Icehotel. The lucky traveller might even get a chance to see the sky bursting out in different colours as the norhtern lights, Aurora Borealis, appears in the dark.
